999 – is the emergency number for the ambulance service. The call is answered directly by a medical dispatcher. Call if you need immediate help because your life or someone else’s life is in danger. This will summon the Medical Emergency Team, which will arrive on the spot and take the injured person to the nearest hospital.
Only call for an ambulance in case of:

  • immediate danger to life
  • an emergency situation which may result in serious bodily harm, injury or loss of life.

Examples of situations that require a call to the emergency medical services team:

loss of consciousness
disturbance of consciousness
injuries resulting from a traffic accident
very high fever with convulsions and/or symptoms not normally seen in the person during the fever
cardiac arrest
acute chest pain or acute abdominal pain
convulsions
abnormal heart rhythm
increased shortness of breath
persistent vomiting, especially accompanied by blood
massive haemorrhage from the lower gastrointestinal tract
massive haemorrhage from the genital tract
rapidly advancing labour
acute and severe hypersensitivity reactions (rash, dyspnoea) as a result of taking medication or being bitten or stung by a venomous animal
poisoning by drugs, chemicals or gases, ingestion of a corrosive agent
extensive burns
heat stroke
hypothermia
electrocution
drowning or submersion
choking
aggression due to mental illness
suicide attempt
fall from a great height
extensive injury as a result of trauma
injury to a lower limb preventing independent movement

The medical dispatcher, after assessing the situation, may refuse to send an ambulance, stating the reason for the refusal and how to proceed.
